Today’s draconian lockdown and unprecedented violations of civil liberties have been justified on the grounds of a flawed computer model from the Imperial College London that predicted deaths totaling in the tens of millions. To boost such claims, these scientists, as well as journalists hungry for sensation, asserted that “50 to 100 million” had died in the 1918 Spanish Flu, which supposedly endured 18 months and longer.

As someone who studied the 1918 influenza during the course of my senior thesis (on U.S. foreign policy) at Cornell University in 1989/90, I quickly realized that the 50 to 100 million death figure was dubious; but I was curious as to where it came from.
